Beyond the Call of Duty: Professor Sydney Engelberg

Dear Readers,

Today we are launching a new feature of this blog tagged "Beyond the Call of Duty". Through this feature we shall bring you stories of great human accomplishments to spice up your weekends and inspire you to sometimes act beyond the call of duty as a positive way of responding to the many confusing, violent, sceptical and deeply fractured voices that have engulfed our world today.

What better way of starting than by recounting the touching story of a 68-year-old Jerusalem Professor of Psychology, Sydney Engelberg. This amiable professor had to assist a nursing mother in his graduate class with her baby when the little child started becoming a distraction to the studnet-mother. Engelberg is said to allow schooling nursing mothers who are unable to make alternative arrangements for their babies to bring such babies to class, even as he steps in once in a while to render whatever assistance he can. The professor, who is both a father and a grandfather, believes that people should not have to choose between raising a child and acquiring an education.

This singular action by Professor Engelberg, which took place sometime last year, turned him into an internet celebrity as a picture of him holding a baby went viral on social media.

Kudos to the Professor! He surely teaches us that greatness also lie in simple and caring acts!
