Nigeria's U23 team defy the odds, beat Japan in Rio opener

It was an extraordinary start to the Olympics for the Nigerian Olympic football team as it swept past Japan in a highly exhilarating match which produced nine goals in all. The Nigerian side scored five of those goals to defeat Japan which trailed from behind with four.

The Nigerian team was stranded in Atlanta for days due to poor logistics before eventually taking off on the morning of the game.

They eventually landed in Manaus around 2:19 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, with the game against Japan only hours away at 9pm.

Despite the setbacks, the Nigerian side was still able to put up an impressive performance to defeat Japan.

It was an evenly contested encounter, with the first 10 minutes of the game producing as much as four goals.

Sadiq Umar scored the opener for Nigeria five minutes into the game, before Shinzo Koroki equalized moments later from the penalty spot. Then Oghenakaro Etebo put Nigeria back in front, only for Takumi Minamino to again make the game all square.

Etebo put Nigeria back in front after 41 minutes and went ahead to make it a hat trick after calmly slotting home his fourth 50 minutes into the game.

However, there was just enough time for some late drama as the Japanese side produced two more goals to make the game 5-4 at full time.

Kudos to Dream Team Six!
