While it seemed that the game had already been won, the Honduran boys came fighting back, scoring two goals in 14 minutes, in the 71st and 85th minutes, to upset the apple cart, and put the Nigerian side under pressure. However, with victory in sight, the Samson Siasia boys held out till the end of the game to clinch the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Brazil finally won their first gold medal in an Olympic football event courtesy of no less a personality than Neymar who put away the final kick as the highly exhilarating and nerve-racking match against a formidable German side came down to penalties. The two sides came into the final game as favourites, having won their semi-final fixtures convincingly to progress to the final.
The game was just as electrifying as it promised, as the two sides proved why they were both worthy champions inside the main bowl of the magnificent Maracana Stadium. The game ended one apiece and dragged on into extra time.
With no side producing a goal to kill the game at the end of extra time, it came down to penalties.
In the penalties, the Germans confidently struck four balls home, missing only one. The Brazilians capitalized on this by laying the weight of their deciding kick on the Barcelona forward, Neymar, who, recognising the immensity of the task before him, slotted the ball past the German goalkeeper to give Brazil her first ever gold medal in an Olympic football event.
They did well considering the level of support the sports ministry gave them. And I think we're the only country to have won gold, silver and bronze in a stretch.
